Ordering

Q: I haven't received our order yet. We have faxed the the Purchase Order twice now, but our Account Manager can't pay for purchases until we recieve the order.

A: See Orders (https://gofll.usfirst.org/pages/ordering_information)

  • Complete your on-line order before sending your PO or Check.
  • If you use a purchase order (PO) as the payment method, and the number is not available, enter “TBD” in the PO number field. PO's are only accepted if your organization has an account with LEGO Education. LEGO Education North America will not accept a purchase order if the organization does not have an account with them. The next step for the team would be to reach out to LEGO North America and determine whether they have an existing account. If they don’t, they will need to complete a credit application.  If your organization does not have an account with LEGO Education, and is a private organization or a non-public school, please contact LEGO Education prior to placing your order with a PO.
  • Include your Team Number on the mailed check or faxed or mailed PO. Payment cannot be credited properly without this information.
  • Payment Received Must Match Order Total

FIRST & PITSCO strongly recommend only placing the order for the exact amount of the payment you will be making at one time.

Matching payments mailed separately is a very time consuming process and could impact the timely delivery of your products. If you need to send in multiple payments over time(for example, with a grant that pays only for your registration fee), place separate materials orders that match the full payment amount you are sending.

Order Additional Materials
Once you have registered a team (purchased team registration), you may place additional materials orders if you did not order them initially.

General Questions

This page will provide questions and answers on topis related to FLL that may be helpful to teams.
The Questions and Answers are based on emails recieved during the season

Q: Do I pay on tourney day or do I need to mail the fee?
A: [10/1] Assume for the moment that you will pay at the Tournament.  This will be decided this weekend and shared with all the teams

Q: Why haven't I heard anything about training or other news?
A: The Louisiana FLL emails may be getting redirected to your Junk inbox.  Add the scot@LaFLL.org and scotmar@bellsouth.net e-mail addresses into your "Safe Senders" list.

Q: Where do the teams get the lego pieces to build their robots so large? Do they buy specific lego sets, or go to garage sales or do students donate pieces or all of the above?
A: The teams either get LEGO pieces from previous year’s models, or from pieces the individual team members have on-hand.  If the team members are into LEGOs enough to do robotics, typically they have some technics sets and a bucket of whatever LEGOS that didn’t get thrown out with the vacuum cleaner or during clean-up.  Many have big tubs full of every color and shape.  Remember, ANY LEGO is acceptable as long as it is in an unaltered condition.  Normal wear and tear is not relevant, but modification or customization is not permitted.  The garage sale approach is a relly good concept to get lots of LEGOs cost-effectively.

Questions from Rookie and Prospective Teams

Often times Rookie Teams have great questions about how things work that, once understood, get lost in the culture until the next new team asks.
Here are some of the great questions that have been asked in the past by Rookie teams or by Prospective Teams:

Q: What needs to be included on the shirt... anything specific... or whatever... If it is "whatever" then could you give me an idea of what is typically included?
A:
Some teams just come in their school uniform.  You can view the images from previous years like: http://www.lafll.org/2008Awards.htmlIn general, team name, who the group is representing (Like school name or logo), perhaps a slogan or catch phrase for the mission of the robotic group (Building Science and Technology at ….), Team number if you like, but unlike FRC where the team number does not change from year-to-year and is part of the team's identity, the FLL team number is really nothing more than a registration sequence number that changes every year so it really isn’t much of an identifier.  I see some teams go to the expense of putting the student’s first name or nick name on the back and it is pretty neat. (typically Team Name oriented - The Molecular Masters from 2006’s Nano Quest had names like Professor, Inspector, Cytoplasm, Nucleus …).  When I had my Lake Castle team, I took the School Castle (Logo) with Jets (Mascot) and redid the castle as if built out of multi-colored LEGOs, and replaced the school jet with an F-16.  The back of our shirt was blank.

Advice for Success

Each team is unique, and that uniqueness is created by the mentors and team members themselves.
There are certain techniques that seem to survive the test of time.  Those will be listed here.

Q: I wanted to use a few of my members last year who are now 6th graders.  Should I pick 5 of them and 5 new students from 5th grade?

A: I would try to involve as many as possible for the duration of the season but tell them at the very beginning and several times during the season that the final 10 that do the interviews and compete on the table will be chosen based on several factors including impact on the team, leadership, teamwork, and participation.  That way you reach them all, but there is a known selection of participants, the rest can still participate through presence, team support, and surely cheering.

Tournaments

Q: I see there are qualifying events one in particular on Nov 6. near us and also the usual tournament on Nov. 20 at St. Dominican. (may have spelled that wrong) I dont ever remember having to go to a qualifying event before moving on to the tournament at St. Dominican. Are we required to qualify before hand this year? If not can we participate in both events if we choose?

A: It is exciting that we currently have 72 teams across the state and expect more than 80 by time the season closes around the end of September.  With that many, we have to implement qualifiers, as many states do, to reduce the number of teams eligible to attend the State Championship to a size the staff and venue can support.  We are currently planning on having one qualifier in North Louisiana in the Shreveport/Bossier City area, one in Central Louisiana near Alexandria, one in the Baton Rouge/Northshore (Lake Ponchartrain) area, and one in the Greater New Orleans area.  Each of those Qualifiers on November 6th will feed qualified teams to the State Championship at Dominican High School on November 20.  Teams will attend one of the qualifiers, and if their overall performance meets a set of criteria we are currently developing, they will be invited to attend and present at the State Tournament.
